Arrábida: The Mountain That Falls Into the Sea
Lisbon's best-kept secret: a green mountain falling into turquoise sea, half an hour from the city
Ask a Lisboeta where they go for the Mediterranean without leaving home and they point south, across the river, to where the Serra da Arrábida drops straight into water so clear that first-time visitors refuse to believe the photographs. It is a protected natural park, half an hour from Lisbon, and most visitors drive past it on their way to the Algarve.
The day can begin in Azeitão - Moscatel in the historic azulejo-lined cellars, sheep's cheese, the famous tortas - and then follow the corniche road through the park, viewpoint by viewpoint, down to the half-moon bay of Portinho da Arrábida.
Lunch belongs to Setúbal: a walk through the Livramento market, then choco frito, the town's crisp fried cuttlefish. For the afternoon, take your pick - a boat onto the Sado estuary among its resident wild dolphins, or Sesimbra and the cliff-edge sanctuary at Cabo Espichel.
