One palace done properly, the wild Atlantic coast, and a slow afternoon in Cascais

Sintra & Cascais: Beyond the Crowds

Everyone tries to do Sintra the same way: three palaces before lunch, a queue at each one, and no real memory of any of them. This day is built on the opposite idea. We visit one monument - properly, first thing in the morning, before the big groups arrive - and then trade the crowds for Atlantic air: the old coast road, the wild beach at Guincho, and a slow afternoon in Cascais.

The monument is your choice, and Sintra spoils you. Pena, if you want the icon - those ramparts and colors are famous for a reason, and arriving at opening changes everything. Quinta da Regaleira, the mystical estate whose initiation well and hidden tunnels have become Sintra's most photographed secret. The Moorish Castle, whose thousand-year-old walls ride the ridgeline with the best views in Sintra. The National Palace of Sintra, down in the heart of the old town, its twin white chimneys the emblem of the village. Monserrate, my personal soft spot: an Arabian-Gothic dream set in one of the most beautiful gardens in Portugal. Biester, a romantic villa hidden in the forest, recently opened and still blissfully quiet. Or Villa Sassetti, whose gardens climb the hillside along the loveliest walking path in Sintra.

From Sintra we follow the old road through Colares toward the ocean. For lunch, my suggestion is Guincho - the wild beach where the fish restaurants sit right over the sand - or Azenhas do Mar, the white village hanging above its own small beach, or another good table along the coastline; I'll gladly book it. The afternoon belongs to Cascais: the cliffs at Boca do Inferno, the bay, the old fishermen's quarter, an ice cream at Santini if you've earned it. We return to Lisbon along the Marginal, with the sea at your window.

Full day from Lisbon, about 8 hours. This is a private tour, guided in your language - English, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian or French.
